How To Get Tv On Your Pc: Four Different Methods To Start Watching Today |
Ever since I started getting TV on my PC, my viewing habits have changed radically. My TV set is collecting dust and I haven't rented or purchased movie DVD's in ages. Getting work done really tests my will power these days since a TV show or a movie is only a few keystrokes away. I will share with you 4 methods of getting TV on your computer so that you too, can inherit these problems!
If your operating system is reasonably current, you're ready to go. I have to warn you that you really should have a broadband Internet connection to enjoy three of the four methods discussed here.
Here they are:
1) Go to the web site of your favorite TV network and the odds are good that their prime time TV shows can be viewed online. I know that CBS and NBC do this and this is very convenient for catching up on any episodes that you may have missed. Of course your selection of shows to watch are somewhat limited but hey, it's there, so why not use it?
2) There are a lot of freebies to be had in the public domain. The public domain consists of intellectual property with expired copyrights that where never renewed. Sometimes this material is simply donated for free unrestricted use. In addition to printed material, graphics and photos, there are also movies and videos. These tend to be old classic movies and TV shows. You need to be the type that enjoys a good Easter egg hunt, since persistent digging is required to find these gems. Just go to a search engine and start looking. Include "public domain" in your search phrase.
3) Are you a do-it-yourself electronics enthusiast or hobbyist? If you said yes, then consider installing a TV tuner card into your PC. They cost on average about $100 to $200 and they function like a TV antenna in that they allow your PC to receive television signals. Note that most of the limitations of regular television apply here since you've effectively turned your PC into a television set. You'll get your usual limited stations with the same reception problems.
4) The most recent technological innovation to hit the "world wide web" today is the ability to receive satellite TV directly off the Internet. This is made possible by proprietary software that is a one time purchase of about $40 to $100. This has had the biggest impact on my TV and movie experience simply because of the enormous number and variety of TV channels available. Up to 3000 channels from around the world are ready for your viewing.
The first two techniques discussed here are free for the taking right now. I view these as a kind of appetizer for the main course: satellite TV, fresh off the Internet. It is definitely an all you can "eat" buffet of endless TV channels.
